Inclusion Nudge of the Month : How to Motivate Executives to Sponsor Women

This is a ‘Feel the Need’ Inclusion Nudge. You can learn more on pages 72-73 in the Inclusion Nudges Guidebook.

The Challenge

Many organisations have few women in senior leadership roles and in the pipeline. Often, these women are not in the network of the executives who make the appointments for senior leadership roles. This limited interaction has implications of not having equal visibility for their performance and not being known (who they are, their work, their skills & potential) in the same way as those who are in the executives’ networks. The consequences are unequal opportunities to advance, as well as a loss of talent. The organisation is missing out the benefits of gender balance in senior leadership roles. One solution is executives sponsoring (advocating, positioning, opening their network, etc.) senior female leaders.

The challenge is that this pattern and the impact of it are invisible to most people. So, how do you motivate executives to sponsor female leaders, to see the need to do this, and also volunteer as sponsors?
