{"id":42748,"date":"2010-02-11T11:36:24","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T11:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jump.eu.com\/jup\/?p=42748"},"modified":"2016-11-14T08:54:46","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T08:54:46","slug":"recognising-men-support-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jump.eu.com\/jup\/recognising-men-support-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Recognising men who do support Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I take real pleasure in announcing that this week\u2019s newsletter contains two lead articles that are written by men in support of gender diversity in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>With renewed interest in pushing gender diversity issues further up the political agendas and new calls for gender quotas gathering apace, it is refreshing to hear from men who are fully supporting Women in their ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>But why should men back what is, essentially a female issue? Quite simply, because no winning team would want to leave half of its best players sitting on the sidelines while those on the pitch struggle to score the goals alone.<\/p>\n<p>In his article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogjump.eu\/?p=9616\">Glass Ceilings \u2013 Treating the Problem, Not the Symptom<\/a>, Dr. Eric Shoars suggests that in order for women to break through the glass ceiling they must first understand that: \u201cPower positions and Gender construct glass ceilings,\u201d and \u201cOrganizational Culture and Societal Roles reinforce [them].\u201d He adds that no matter how talented a woman may be \u201cIf the men who occupy those power positions do not believe women have the necessary aptitude for executive positions, women will not get promoted when a vacancy occurs.\u201d It\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, quotas can help even out the balance but changing the culture of an organisation can only be achieved if men persuade other men \u2013 particularly top executives \u2013 to wake up and realize that Women have just as much to contribute to their organisations as their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Tarabella, MEP, PES Belgium is a staunch supporter of gender diversity in the workplace. He is also author of a report on equality between women and men in 2009. In his article entitled: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogjump.eu\/?p=9613\">Oui \u00e0 plus de mixit\u00e9 au top des entreprises!<\/a> (Yes to more diversity at the top of companies!), he sets out well-argued reasons <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogjump.eu\/?p=8808\">why more men should support women in their ambitions<\/a> and thus into higher positions within companies.<\/p>\n<p>JUMP also recognises the huge benefits that are to be had by including men who support women in their professional ambitions.
