Where does Europe stand in terms of corporate gender equality compared to the U.S.

Where does Europe currently stand compared to the U.S. in terms of corporate gender equality?
Thanks to the Civil Rights Movement, the US were ahead of Europe when it comes to the concepts of privilege, discrimination and positive discrimination. This last one especially – positive discrimination - is not very well accepted in Europe. Even there, American companies were the first ones to take up the subject and they still have a stronger awareness about it than most European companies.
Europe is made of many different countries facing many different situations. Take for instance the Nordic countries: they constitute the podium of every gender equality ranking Index. In countries such as France, Belgium, and the UK, women can have a career and be a mother but it is more complicated in the German-speaking and Mediterranean countries where motherhood is regarded as a full commitment. As a consequence, the birth rate and the rate of participation of women in the economy is much lower in these countries. Women tend to leave the workforce as soon as they become mothers or to drastically reduce their working time. In Eastern countries, the communist influence that put everyone (men and women) to work quickly dissipated.

Women Aren’t Special: The Insidious Nature Of Benevolent Sexism

HIGHLIGHTS JESSICA SCHREINDL | ROLE REBOOT

Until women are respected as fully human and fully unique, we will continue to be placed on pedestals and in boxes that define us by our gender and determine our destinies.
A friend of mine recently shared a Vox article written by a self-proclaimed progressive dude titled, “Democrats should start accepting pro-life liberals like me” (spoiler, he’s really pro-choice). While the piece has its points,...

STARTING A VENTURE IS A MAN’S WORLD – SO WHAT?

BUILD YOUR OWN BUSINESS VLERICK BUSINESS SCHOOL

Entrepreneurship 2.0 Newsletter #2 Numbers from all over the world repeatedly show that male entrepreneurs outnumber female ones in innovation-driven economies like Belgium’s. Impertinentes

Written by
SHIRLEY HICTER

Subtle sexism – not so subtle anymore

Interrupted. Talked over. Silenced. “Subtle sexism” includes behaviours so routine in a woman’s life that we may come to accept them, forgetting how prevalent and damaging they are. Diversity is a necessity, a driver, an opportunity. Paying lip service is not enough

HIGHLIGHTS GILLES PÉLISSON | LINKEDIN

Today’s organizations care about diversity, though to differing degrees, probably encouraged in some cases by evolving legislation, which forces them to care. And happily, the law is telling us what we already knew: that businesses must show how we can live together better, must be in the vanguard of a profound transformation in our ways of being, of thinking, of behaving. There is no doubt that what we do...

Reducing gender gaps would significantly benefit women, society and the economy

COMPANIES & GENDER ILO

Gender gaps remain one of the most pressing challenges facing the world of work. Women are substantially less likely than men to participate in the labour market, and once in the job market, they are less likely than men to find a job and the quality of employment they do find remains a key concern, a new ILO report shows. Helping women access the labour market is nevertheless an important first step.
