How gender bending can challenge our biases

Most (possibly all!) of us go through life at best only mildly aware of our own personal biases and on what drives our opinions of the people we meet in our private and professional lives, or that we vote for as citizens. Our project, “Her Opponent” is an experiment that aims to make us aware of these biases, and elicit both a personal reflection and an open discussion about their consequences. We re-staged excerpts of the 2016 US presidential elections but with the genders of the candidates inverted. An actress performed the words, gestures, pauses and pitch of Donald Trump and an actor did the same for Hillary Clinton. This session will present the gender-bending experiment and discuss some of the lessons we have learnt through it.
